A journey into nature and feelings
Welcome to the Eco-Emotions project. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to explore the wonders of nature while also learning about their emotions. In today’s world, many children are spending more time indoors and on screens, which can make it harder for them to understand their feelings and connect with the environment around them. Our project aims to change that.
Many children today are feeling disconnected from nature. With so much time spent on screens, they miss out on playing outside, discovering plants and animals, and learning about the world. This disconnect can lead to feelings of frustration, less empathy towards the environment, and can make managing emotions tougher. Research has shown that as children spend more time with technology, they partake less in outdoor activities. As fun as screens can be, they sometimes take the place of the amazing experiences nature can offer
The Eco-Emotions Project is designed to encourage children reconnect with nature while also developing important emotional skills. By integrating Eco-Emotions into daily activities in early years and school-age communities, we support educators in guiding children to strengthen their emotional bonds and become responsible caretakers of the environment. Our goal is to make learning about sustainability enjoyable and engaging for everyone.
Through informative project pages and engaging webinars, educators will gain valuable insights and knowledge about emotional skills and nature connection, allowing them to better support the children in their care
Educators will be empowered to deepen their existing practices and inspire a love for nature in children, reinforcing the importance of caring for the environment
The project aims to create a nurturing network of educators, families and organisations who are committed to promoting emotional wellbeing and environmental awareness for the future generation, strengthening the support system around them.
Engaging in fun activities will help children manage their emotions better, making them more resilient.
Children will explore the concept of sustainable living and uncover the significance of caring for their planet.
Through exploration and play, children will develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
A community will be built that values sustainability and emotional growth, benefiting everyone involved.
Educators will receive the tools they need to support children in their emotional and environmental journeys.
Introducing our collection of six self-regulation cards designed to cultivate emotional awareness through themes rooted in nature. Celebrating the vibrant rhythms of the Irish seasons, these cards encourage an enriching connection between children, themselves, and the natural world.
Educators can thoughtfully integrate these cards into their learning environments, promoting meaningful dialogues and engaging activities that nurture emotional intelligence and a profound appreciation for nature. Families can also use these cards at home to create special moments together. Whether it’s imagining a leaf dancing in the wind or exploring nature outside, parents can invite their children to discuss their feelings and experiences. This shared exploration can strengthen family bonds and support children feel more connected to their emotions and the world around them.

Invite children to close their eyes and take a deep breath as they imagine the leaf soaring high. As they exhale, encourage them to visualise the leaf gently floating back to the ground. Let them repeat this exercise a few times, inhaling and exhaling in harmony with the leaf’s journey. Ask them how they feel when they imagine the leaf's movement, supporting a discussion about lightness and calmness.
Imagine being a tiny acorn that grows into a big, strong oak tree. Ask children to picture their roots digging deep into the ground while their branches stretch up high into the sky. Invite them to share how it feels to be strong and brave as they grow. Encourage them to think about how they are growing and changing.
Invite children to take a moment to stop and look up at the sky. Encourage them to notice how the clouds move and change shapes. Ask them to share what they see and how it makes them feel. This helps children think about how change happens in their own lives.
Invite children to explore the colourful nature around them. When outside, support them notice the bright colours of the flowers and trees. Encourage them to feel the soft breeze on their skin and listen to the cheerful sounds of the birds and the rustling leaves. Ask questions about what they see, hear, and feel to help them enjoy and appreciate the world around them.
Invite children to close their eyes and listen carefully to the sound of the wind. Guide them to imagine the wind blowing over the ocean and making waves, while also listening for the sounds of birds. This can happen outside or by playing nature sounds indoors. Encourage children to think about how these sounds make them feel, supporting them connect with nature and their own feelings
Invite children to imagine themselves as a rock sitting in a flowing river. Support them feel the gentle water around them while staying strong and steady. Discuss what it means to be strong and encourage children to share times when they felt strong in their own lives.

Nature can have a profound impact on family wellbeing, serving as a nurturing backdrop that fosters emotional awareness and deepens connections among family members. Engaging with the natural environment encourages families to slow down, observe, and reflect, creating opportunities for open communication and shared experiences. Activities such as hiking, gardening, or simply spending time outdoors allow families to bond over the beauty and tranquility of nature, promoting mindfulness and reducing stress. Furthermore, nature often acts as a catalyst for children’s emotional development by providing them with diverse sensory experiences and stimulating curiosity. As families explore natural spaces together, they not only strengthen their emotional ties but also cultivate a lasting appreciation for the environment, nurturing a sense of shared responsibility and connection to the world around them.
