Deepening emotional ties to nature and cultivating environmental responsibility
Children are becoming increasingly disconnected from nature, which weakens their emotional ties and understanding of sustainability. They're spending more time on screens and less time outdoors, which can harm their emotional wellbeing and awareness of the environment. This disconnect can lead to difficulties in managing emotions, reduced empathy for the environment, and a lack of motivation to take protective actions. Coates and Pimlott-Wilson (2018) found that the rise in digital technology use has decreased children's participation in outdoor activities. While technology and outdoor experiences are often viewed as opposites, this may oversimplify the issue. Some argue that digital technology is replacing children's connection to nature by offering an easier and less demanding way to interact and learn (Louv, 2005).
The project aims to address the disconnect between children and nature, promoting emotional wellbeing and sustainability in Early Years and School Age Care. By integrating Eco-Emotions into daily activities, we can support children build a stronger bond with nature, improve their emotional regulation, and develop a sense of responsibility towards the environment. The project ultimately seeks to create a more sustainable and emotionally aware community within Early Years and School Age Care, preparing children to become caring and environmentally conscious citizens. Bakir-Demir’s study highlights the importance of self-regulation in child development and how factors like age, temperament, and environment influence these abilities (Bakir-Demir et al., 2019).
The goal is to enhance children's emotional regulation skills through sustainability-focused education and care. We aim to foster a meaningful connection between children and the environment, instilling a sense of responsibility and agency. Additionally, we seek to create a supportive community of educators committed to promoting emotional wellbeing and environmental awareness in Early Years and School Age Care.
